One of the most important and integral supporters during a child's developing hockey career will be you, the parents. You're their biggest fan, you're there for their practices, -30 snow storms to get to games on time, you're there to wipe the tears and hug away the triumphs and the tribulations. Sports can be easy to get wrapped up in, so don't ever forget that the number one goal for your child on the ice should be to have fun. Winning is not the be all and end all of hockey.
Your child is developing life skills like integrity, honesty, sportsmanship, compassion, friendship, professionalism, respect, team work, hard work. Hockey is helping to shape who your child is going to be as an adult. Your role and response to their practice and game outcomes is pivotal in developing a child who can not only celebrate successes but who can learn from and accept losses. Opportunity for growth and development both for our kids and us as their parents/coaches is always present. Be a role model.
Below are some articles, stories and resources to help you become the best supportive sports parent you can be! If you have suggestions for items to add, feel free to email them to us: clairmontminorhockey@gmail.com
Remember: The referees are human and feel the same pressure and stress as the athletes during games. Please remember they too deserve a safe and comfortable environment where they can perform and gain experience in a positive manner. Many of the referees we will encounter, especially in the younger age groups, are just kids themselves. Let's be role models for them too and teach them how to be sportsmanlike and professional.
